Third party websites may provide different security features than the Rivermark Wealth Management website.Investment Philosophy:The Goal:  The only real objectives with an investment portfolio are to fund your life's most important needs and goals and secondarily to leave a legacy for those that you love.  Beating the S&P 500 doesn't make the list (although it's fun if it happens).Asset Allocation:  The most important decision that an investor makes is the core asset allocation decision (stocks/bonds/cash/real estate, etc).  Data indicates that the asset allocation accounts for close to 90% of long-term results, leaving a small balance to be split between market timing and security selection.  Active vs Passive:  The data is overwhelmingly in favor of a passive investment strategy.  Buying low-cost and globally diversified holdings isn't nearly as exciting as trying to find the next Google or Amazon.  What is exciting is achieving superior long-term investment results all while spending significantly less time and exposing yourself (and those that depend on you) to significantly less risk.All that said, I still advocate for allocating a portion of your portfolio to individual holdings or speculative investments.  In my personal portfolio, the Vegas Fund (as I call it) accounts for ~10% of the total portfolio.  Investing in companies that you believe have significant upside, due to a strong competitive advantage, a visionary leadership team, or for other reasons is what makes investing fun.  I also believe that my Vegas Fund keeps me from tinkering with the larger part of the portfolio where I could potentially set myself (and my family) back financially.Other famous quotes that I believe in:"When it comes to investing....be greedy when others are fearful and fearful when others are greedy.""It's about time in the market, not timing the market."Ron Guay
